100 Years Together: Commonwealth Bank Donation

100 Years Together

In celebration of our joint Centenary year, Commonwealth Bank has presented Open Minds with a cheque for $10,000.

Open Minds are one of the ten organisations, and the only Queensland organisation, that will be presented with a congratulatory Centenary grant of $10,000 across Australia.

Commonwealth Bank was born through an Act of Parliament in December 1911 and in July 1912, the first branch opened to the public in Melbourne. Open Minds was founded in 1912, which makes it eligible for this grant.

Mike Gilmour, Chair of Open Minds is thrilled with the surprise contribution from the Bank. He said “such a generous donation will allow us to continue our work in supporting our clients to live a life of choice, fulfilment and participation – put simply this money will make life easier for our clients”.

This celebration of fellow 100-year organisations is part of the Bank’s Centenary Staff Giving Back initiative. Staff Giving Back enabled Commonwealth Bank staff to make suggestions on how they thought the Bank could make a difference to the lives of Australians.

Commonwealth Bank CEO, Ian Narev, said, “The Centenary Staff Giving Back program is an important initiative because it enabled our staff to put forward ideas that they believe will have an impact on communities in which they live. This idea immediately stood out as it provides an opportunity to congratulate these very worthy, and yet also humble, community organisations in reaching this remarkable milestone.”

Open Minds’ local Commonwealth Bank Area Manager Mr Sean McDonald visited the Chester Road residence with the marketing team on Wednesday 14 March and was amazed to see firsthand the dedicated work of Open Minds staff and meet some of the very valuable clients.

Open Minds is grateful for this generous donation and we look forward to building a great new partnership with Commonwealth Bank!

Happy 100th Birthday!

Brain Injury Awareness Week

Brain injury is often referred to as the “invisible” disability. This year’s Brain Injury Awareness Week looks out for Australians who are not only invisible but out of sight, out of mind.
This year’s Brain Injury Awareness Week will be held from 15-21 August and the theme is devoted to people with a brain injury in the criminal justice system. Click here to read more.

Open Minds is participating in the Week in many ways, such as hosting a Jamminn’ for OM client participation event on Sunday 21 August and as a partner for the Bang On A Beanie Campaign (led by Synapse) to be officially launched on Thursday 11 August at Brisbane Powerhouse, New Farm.

To find out more on the events happening in your area, phone Toni Brearley on (07) 3896 4206 or Thea Isles on (07) 3896 4236.

What is ABI?? Read more here

The BANGONABEANIE Campaign will strive to encourage people to buy a blue branded beanie to support Brain Injury Awareness Week. By doing so, they will actively show support for anyone they know – loved ones, friends and colleagues – who are living with ABI. The profits from this unique new campaign will go toward improving essential services for people living with ABI, including support during the most crucial stage of recovery, the post-injury period.

BANGONABEANIE will be fun and, more importantly, informative and we formally invite you to join with us in this exciting new program.

Buy your beanie or t-shirt from any Open Minds office, or to sell them in your workplace please phone (07) 3896 4206.

Cos’ IT Caird Annual Lunch

.

..

Cos’ IT Caird – The Charity for QLD IT community - will be holding our annual lunch on Friday 25 May 2012 at The Sofitel, Brisbane.

Last year’s event saw more than 650 members of the Queensland IT community get together and raise in excess of $170,000 for Ipswich Flood victims and Open Minds.
In 2012, funds raised will be going towards the ongoing work of Open Minds and the rollout of the new Cos’ IT Caird Crisis to Control packages.

These packages are assisting families where a member has suffered an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). From Crisis to Control will assist the person and their family to manage and understand the sometimes complex and diverse array of community services, information, resources and community linkages to enhance and enable a more positive and successful transition to home.

The luncheon includes a 3 course meal, drinks and live entertainment with some Australian Olympic legends.

Test your sports knowledge in the trivia competition and buy a ticket for a chance to go to the 2012 London Olympics!

The Cos IT Caird lunch is a great opportunity to catch up with friends and customers, all while supporting families in crisis.

Cost: $2200 for a table of 10, includes 3 course lunch, beer and wine

Love and Other Drugs – Australian Story

ABC’s Australian Story recently interviewed Sam, an Open Minds Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) client, his fiancée Sally and their families regarding his amazing achievements and recovery since sustaining a severe head injury in February 2010.

Sam’s story was aired on Australian Story on Monday 27 June on the ABC network.

Sam Goddard and Sally Nielsen

Sam Goddard and Sally Nielsen

About Sam:
Sam Goddard, aged 24, sustained a severe head injury on 14/2/10.  Sam was a fit young man who enjoyed his work and sport. Sam was playing in a charity soccer match after which he was admitted to hospital with severe dehydration. During this admission he had eight strokes which caused him to be in a coma for five weeks; the doctors have not been able to explain the reason for the strokes.

Sam’s family were advised by medical specialists that Sam was likely to be permanently blind, he would not be able to recognise his family and friends and he would never walk again.

However, Sam proved to the specialist his determination and with his supportive fiancee Sally and family behind him, things changed. He is able recognise people, he is not blind and he is walking with minimal assistance.

Sam has transitioned home from hospital and is living with his fiancée and his family.  Open Minds ABI Support Workers are privileged to be working with Sam since he was discharged from hospital and are currently assisting him undertake his intensive home therapy program.  The support workers enjoy working with Sam and really feel a great deal of satisfaction seeing Sam slowly but surely achieve his goals, through lots of determination and hard work.

Watch Sam’s incredible journey online with Australian Story’s  iView.

Sally also spoke to Nova 106.9fm’s breakfast program on Tuesday 28 June. Listen here
